DINNER PLAIN & HOTHAM

They're covered in snow during winter, so you might not associate the alpine villages of Dinner Plain and Hotham with all things cycling, but once the white stuff melts away, jump on two wheels and take in some of the most breathtaking views going around.

Because Dinner Plain and Hotham are primarily snow resorts, some products, services and accommodation may only be open in the snow-covered winter months. Make sure you check these businesses for summer availability.

CYCLING HIGHLIGHTS

Road cycling at Mount Hotham
7 PEAKS RIDE - HOTHAM

Possibly the most challenging of the 7 Peaks rides, the Hotham climb commences in the gateway town of Harrietville and follows the scenic Great Alpine Road up to Hotham Village. Tall timber forest soon turns to snowgums as you quickly gain altitude, riding through exposed saddles and past lookouts until you hit the infamous CRB Hill.

7 PEAKS RIDE - DINNER PLAIN

This 7 Peaks ascent is the longest of the seven ... and also the flattest. But don't let that fool you, it's surprisingly challenging and will work your legs like only the High Country can. A great way to ride it is to roll out down to Omeo from Dinner Plain, past Cobungra Station on the Great Alpine Road, and taking note to grab a breather at the Kosciuszko Lookout around 20km in. Grab a halfway refuel in Omeo and then return by conquering the climb. 85km total makes for a solid day on the wheels.

DINNER PLAIN MOUNTAIN BIKE PARK

Dinner Plain's MTB trails are a relatively recent addition to the High Country, evolving over the last few years from a couple of hand-cut local trails into a master-planned park with 8 thoughtful down tracks leading to a single up track. The magnificent alpine setting makes for incredibly scenic riding, and with plenty of accommodation options close to the trailhead a great weekend's riding is guaranteed.
